That does seem a bit pricey, but I was reading the other day in the restaurant critiques on facebook, by Tommy Lamache, where a restaurant called "The Hub", advertised a special of French onion soup for $6 a bowl. Nothing is cheap anymore. I ordered the Zuppa Toscana soup at Olive Garden recently as an extra side and it was $5.79. It looked to be a generous portion, in a nice deep bowl, but low and behold, the bowl had a bottom about 3/4 of an inch thick and the inside of the bowl was as shallow as a deep saucer.
Is that store you mention that downtown market near the corner of Bleecker St. Where Rite Aid used to be? I remember a while back when you mentioned a small market opening in the area of the busy corner that was quite pricey.

As a price comparison, if you go online and order a cup of soup and a side salad from Panera to go, figure on paying $12-15.

Yes that store in in the old Rite Aid building and is a very beautiful hip store with youth in mind I guess. The other place is the Hub down by the CENTRO Bus Hug. I rarely see people in there maybe two or three now and then. He has a Sunday brunch and alcohol and music event from 10 AM to I think 1 PM for $14.00. Not interested in that.
I think the last time I was in Panera Bread was in the '90s. I thought it to expensive then and I was teaching. lol.

Panera also seemed a bit expensive for us PB. There was one across the road from her surgeon's office in Winston Salem and we ate there a couple of times when we arrived early for her follow up after surgery. If I remember correctly we paid over $30 for two sandwiches and small salads.
We have a Panera here, but we have a family-run chain of deli's call McCallister's that we prefer. They serve the true NY style deli sandwiches, piled high with meat, a variety of fresh breads or rolls for about $7 or so for pastrami stacked high enough that I bring half home for later, or else we order one sandwich and an extra plate and split one. Their sandwiches remind me of the old Mannie's on Oneida St and their thick sandwiches they called "stacked" sandwiches. They used to serve a roast beef sandwich, piled high with nice thin and pink, medium roasted beef, with a nice mayo and horseradish sauce. Their sandwiches were literally 3-4 inches high.

Barb likes their soup and sandwich combo. For me lunch is normally a trip to the fridge for leftovers and salad fixings. We will probably have lunch Friday at Panera in Erie PA. We will be traveling to visit son Joe and family and that is our normal food and fuel stop.

You probably know every blade of grass between Utica and Minnesota by now CB. When I drove between Little Falls and Wisconsin and Iowa every week, I knew the mile marker of every fuel and food stop along the way. Is the old Green Shingle Truck Stop still open, between Erie and the Ohio line? That was an old fashioned truck stop with middle age waitresses that still chewed their Wrigley's gum and called ya "hon." lol

I don't think I ever stopped there. After Erie our next stop is typically in the Toledo area. We have changed a couple of our stopping points. Our friends in Berwyn sold their home and moved to Vegas. My sister and brother-in-law sodl their home in Rochester MN and moved to Tampa.
I can still do the drive from here to Lansing MI but that is about my limit. My late father-in-law could drive from Utica to St. Paul w/o stopping for sleep. That's about 23 hours of drive time.

CB, are they expecting any winter weather along your route for this trip West? Do you have your snow tires on and your winter stuff like a scraper, gloves, and other winter related items ready to go? I think I read somewhere that there may be a slight chance of nastiness with some lake effect that may sweep in off Lake Ontario. I know that traveling along the Southern shores of the great lakes this time of year can be full of surprises. I have driven along I-90 when I drove into blinding snowstorms and had to navigate by the reflector posts on the roadside for a few miles and then broke out into the sunshine, dry roads, and blue skies once again.

I haven't checked the forecasts yet but I will. Mid-October snow is possible but not likely. More likely is getting up Monday to fog which doesn't burn off until I am half way across Ohio.

Have you seen the new slider sandwiches at Subway. It is one slice of meat a slice of cheese and some skinny lettuce leaf for I think $1.89. I see that have a ham and swiss, some kind of Italian. Not sure if it is for a snack since it is to small for a lunch. I guess. Maybe good for little kids.LOL |

I recently read a poll that compared Subway, Jersey Mike's, and Jimmy John's. Jimmy John's was rated best with Jersey Mike's in a close second. They had little good to say about Subway. Jersey Mike's is MY favorite. I go there once in a while for an easy supper. They make a good Philly cheesesteak that Kathy likes and I always order the giant #13, which is an Italian combination, hold the tomato, extra onions, light on the lettuce, and lots of jalapenos, squirted with the "juice" which is wine vinegar and oil, sprinkled with oregano, salt and pepper.
It is big enough that I get supper out of it and wrap the rest for lunch the next day. When in Utica the best sub is from Venice Pizzeria in Yorkville. It is a bit soggy the next day but still delicious.

Panera makes a french onion soup that is very good. We went there for lunch a couple years ago & ordered subs but we weren't impressed at all. Haven't gone back since.
