Flu season has begun
T h e f l u h a s l a n d e d i n
Oneida County early this
year.
Rome Memorial Hospital
announced its first confirmed
case Thursday, Sept. 26.
“Typically, we start seeing
a handful of cases in October
with flu season reaching its peak in January and
February,” Emma Ingalls,
director of infection prevention, said in a statement.
“Because flu is highly contagious, the numbers tend
to grow as temperatures get
cooler and people spent more
time inside where you’re
more likely to be exposed to
someone who has the flu.”
So health officials are recommending that everyone six
months of age and older get a
flu shot as soon as possible.

I get the shot every year except for once about 10 years ago when I didn't for one reason or another. I learned the hard way as sure enough I got the flu & was sick for a good 10 days & ended up with bronchitis. Learned my lesson & next week I'll be rolling up my sleeve.

I missed my shot last year and luckily didn't get hit with hit. I never used to bother but being up there at Walmart there are too many folks I come in contact with whose hygiene is far from questionable. lol! Going to be one of the first in line at my PCP's next week.

We got ours last week. I guess we automatically get the senior dose now. I have read suggestions that perhaps seniors should get a flu shot in September and a booster in January but I think the development of anything like that is several years off.

I always get mine in September. I heard about the possible need for a booster in January for seniors. I got the Senior shot also. I have to get the pneumonia vaccine this year since I got the first shot 5 years ago.

Oh now isn't that a hoot. Well the last time the flu vaccine was questionable I must have gotten the protection cause I never caught a cold. Oh I also take 1000mg of garlic once a day in the morning. Many of the people here swear by it and since starting this several years ago I have been free of colds well except one that went into pneumonia which was not nice at all. I'll start wearing a surgical mask and using hand sanitizer on the Bus like crazy again during flu season. I wipe down the back of the seat in front of me as well as the top handles( head braces) on the top two seats in front of me. Oh and I must get out another box of surgical gloves to take with me on the Bus. I wear one pair while on the Bus then dispose of them when I leave then apply hand sanitizer before I enter a store.

I decided to head to RiteAid this morning for the flu shot. While I was waiting the nurse asked me if I wanted the Shingrix vaccine for shingles as they had a dose available. My Dr. has been hounding me to get the vaccine since last year but since there's a shortage i couldn't find a pharmacy that had it. So i got the flu shot in my left arm & Shingrix in my right. I've heard about some nasty side effects from this Shingrix but other then a little soreness in my arm & a little tiredness everything is ok. We'll see.

The side effects are not nearly as nasty as having the shingles.

I had a case of the shingles back in the late 90's and was not happy at all. I still have to get vaccinated.

I have gotten my flu shot at my last visit to the VA, but I need to schedule an appointment for a shingles shot. I think that it is a regimen of two shots over a period of a few weeks or so. I updated my pneumonia vaccine last year and if I am not mistaken, it is a once in a lifetime shot now. I certainly do not want to get shingles. My uncle had them all across the small of his back and my grandmother once had them on her forehead and in her scalp. They suffered terribly.

The new Shingrix vaccine according to my Dr. is 95% effective. The vaccine is administered twice & the pharmacy said they'd call in 2-6 months to come in for the 2nd shot. For some reason there's a shortage of it. I'd been calling pharmacies in the area for a few months & none of them had it. Guess I lucked out yesterday.

1000mg of garlic? At one time when I lived up North and cut wood for a wood burning stove every year, I used to take garlic capsules to keep the flies away. It worked for black flies and mosquitoes quite well. Garlic seems to be a universal cure for many ailments. I worked with and older Italian fellow from Rome years ago that told me that garlic would cure cold, moles, sore butt holes, fits, farts and freckles, haha. He used put copious amounts of fresh garlic in everything he cooked at the fire house and sitting with him a crash truck with the windows closed and the heater on in winter would leave you wanting for the standby to be over so you could return to station and get the hell out of the truck for some fresh air. His garlic breath would make you eyes water. He also said that garlic was also the mouthwash of great Italian lovers. LOL
