www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/florida-man-parks-smart-car-in-kitchen-over-fear-hurricane-dorian-would-blow-it-away/ar-AAGO1hb?li=BBnb4R7How convenient. Kathy's brother used to keep his Harley in the dining room during the winter, but this is the first time I have heard of someone parking a car in their kitchen. I wonder if his wife will serve him breakfast in the car if he pulls up to the kitchen island and toots his horn. There is someone along the road that I take to go into town that has a smart car. They park it on a patio adjacent to the side door to their home. I chuckle when I see it on the road. The guy that drives it is as big as I am. When I see him all scrunched up and hunched over the wheel in it, it reminds me of a clown car. I once passed him on I-81. I-81 is 3 lanes in each direction with a 70mph speed limit where it passes through Bristol Va. Between exits one and seven the traffic becomes quite congested as it provides access to some of the most dense shopping areas, and services such as major hotels and gas stations. I thought to myself at the time that the guy was either very brave or rather stupid. Route 11 parallels the interstate and is much slower and safer for that puddle jumper. I would be terrified to go out on the interstate, surrounded by tractor trailers and larger cars and trucks, all flying long at 70+ miles per hour in such a small and vulnerable vehicle

How is the traffic on I-81? My sister and brother-in-law will be returning to FL in a few days and their thoughts are to stay away from I95 as much as possible. Their end point is Tampa.

Traffic is not that bad on I-81. Much better than on I-95. The most traffic coming from NY and going I-81 to I-40 to Knoxville, and then I-75 South through Atlanta and on to Florida will be in Knoxville where I-40 and I-75 blend until you get west of Knoxville where I-75 breaks off for Atlanta and South. Atlanta would be the only other place they would hit any serious traffic and there are bypasses around it, or they can stay on I-75 straight through town. They simply want to avoid hitting Atlanta in rush hour.
We take about 11 hrs or so to come to Bristol from Utica
Taking that route, it is 1500 miles and 23-24 hours. Personally I would much prefer coming this way than going down I-95 but it a matter of preference. Timewise the trip is about the same either way. The scenery is much better coming down 81 and 75 and personally I find the traffic through Knoxville and Atlanta to be less stressful and chaotic than DC, Baltimore, and the I-95 corridor. It has been several years since I traveled the entire way from NY to Florida along the I-95 corridor.
They also could go from Bristol and Johnson City down I-26 through Asheville NC to I-85 to Atlanta, avoiding Knoxville. I have never gone that way so I can't speak to the time element or miles that way.
