Got up early this morning & because we're coffee drinkers got ready to put a pot of coffee on. Or so I thought. Ran the kitchen faucet to fill the pot & what am I greeted with on this fine Sunday morning? Brown water! Ran the tap for a couple minutes to clear the line & it's the same thing. Sooooo, got dressed & ran ovet to Wally World for a 5 gallon jug of water so we can have coffee, brush or teeth, etc. And here it is almost noon & the water is still brown. Checked the MVWA & no mention of any issues, which is not surprising it being Sunday & all. So, I've had enough. It's time to look into water filtration so we won't have to deal with Uticas poor water quality any longer. This is what we pay thru the wazoo for. Water that's undrinkable.
Anyone know anything about those filters that fasten onto the faucet?

I wonder if it was caused by a watermain break. Sometimes if there is a break and they repair it, or if there has been a fire and the hydrants have been used, there is sediment broken loose and rusty or brown water happens, but usually only for a short time.
We occasionally get sand, rust, or sediment in our faucet water and mineral scale also would build up in my coffee maker. We also seem to have a lot of chlorine in our water at times and I don't like the smell so we installed a Pur brand faucet mounted filter. I use it for water for coffee. We also have a Brita pitcher that we keep in the fridge for drinking. Both work well. I only chose Pur as a brand because it was for sale at Kroger's, where I shop often, and they also carry the filter cartridges so I don't have to run around town or go to Lowe's to get filter refills.

Might have been a fire over that way. I would add perhaps one of the street cleaners refilling their tanks, but it was Saturday so that might be doubtful. The way they're tearing stuff up in Utica it's hard to tell what is what anymore.

It finally cleared up a couple hours ago. Haven't heard of any fires around here so who knows.

Got the new Pur water water filter today that i ordered from Amazon. Took 5 minutes to install it & we're good to go. There's a definite improvement in the taste & clarity of the water. For $25 bucks it's worth it.

Making coffee with filtered water makes a huge difference in the taste of the coffee.

I use 2 Brita Pitchers... a big one for the counter and a smaller one for the refrigerator. Yes, they make a big difference both in the taste of things and health-wise. They've more than paid for themselves.
I'm in south Utica and we haven't had a problem with brown water lately. Maybe it's a local thing in your neighborhood and the MVWA should know about it. Chances are someone else has called to let them know but it can't hurt to notify them.

I couldn't live without the filtered water. The chlorine level that they put in our water leaves it smelling strong enough to bleach your underwear. Brita and Pur both do an outstanding job.

Hopefully this filter will take care of that. We had the Brita pitcher, they do work but it took up too much space in the fridge so we gave it away.

I know what you mean about size, BHU... that's why the big one sits on my counter at room temperature. But I always make room in the refrigerator for the smaller one - clean water is that important to me. I hope your PUR filter gives you many years of peace of mind and clean water.

We have only had to change the filters once and it was after a year of service before the indicator notified us that the filter needed to be changed. Pretty inexpensive source of clean and tasty drinking water.

I guess it depends on how much sediment and such you have in your water. It has thus far taken the chlorine smell out of the water and it makes good coffee. We don't use the filter except to draw water for coffee or to drink, and most of that that we drink is put through a Brita pitcher rather than the Pur. Does yours turn on and off. Ours can be shut off so the water is not diverted through the filter. We don't use filtered water for dishes and cooking. Because I work outside quite a bit I drink a lot of bottled water also, and always keep a bottle of water on my nightstand as well as here on my desk.
Yes, it does last a long time. It takes me quite a while to use 100 gallons just for coffee.

I have a Britta but stopped using it since I could not taste any difference in coffee made with or without filtered water. I cannot taste any difference in bottled or tap water either. LOL Maybe they have filters already installed here which I doubt and if they do I am sure filters have not been changed since the building was built.
