It seems, according to Tom Clark, that it is a policy in place only at the Little Falls location, which is not owned by Clark. I don't blame him for jumping to make that clear to via local media. McDonald's in the past has had problems with people loitering for extended periods without spending money, but those instances have been scattered and have seldom made the news. Little group gatherings over coffee and chit chat have always been encouraged in most cases. I recall only one other case that actually created a very real problem and I don't remember how it was handled or what the outcome was. It was a case many years ago involving the downtown location and a problem with those who were placed out into the community by Utica State Psych Center. It was when the Hotel Utica was a nursing home or long term assisted living place. The poor souls were gathering there and lingering over multiple free refills on coffee and creating an atmosphere that was not comfortable for other paying customers.
It seems to me that it flies in the face of the policies of most McDonald's restaurants. The corporate plan has been to ENCOURAGE people to enjoy a reasonably long and leisurely meal and to stick around while the kids play on their playgrounds, and adults either socialize over coffee or take advantage of the wifi. When I first moved here a neighbor and I would often go to Burger King, have a breakfast sandwich and spend time chatting with other seniors who gathered there for coffee and socializing. We occasionally were there for an hour and it was encouraged by management. We were not rushed out the door. Since retiring my brother often goes to McDonald's early in the morning, orders a breakfast sandwich and coffee and leisurely enjoys browsing the news on the internet on his tablet. I have been known to take my newspaper and spend a half an hour or so eating a leisurely breakfast while browsing through my newspaper while Kathy enjoys sleeping in.
I guess if they want people to be in and out quickly they need to do away with playgrounds, free refills on beverages, and wifi that can take the fast out of fast food. They can't have it both ways. Thank goodness it seems to be a localized and isolated incident.
Do any of you gather at a McDonalds with other folks for a morning coffee clutch, or just enjoy taking a relaxing break over a second cup of coffee? I don't do it often any more. The neighbor that I used to go with passed away from cancer and I just have gotten away from the practice.
