If I lived in the inner city in Utica NY I might be considering moving to a safer neighborhood such as downtown Kabul Afghanistan. It seems that every day there is a "shots fired" incident in the Utica area news.
We have our share of gun violence here also, but here it is centered more in rural areas and is often a case of domestic violence rather than gang activity or drug related. The country folks and rednecks seem to lean toward killing as an acceptable action when is wife is cheating, or when you husband abuses a wife. They don't call the cops. They just kill the offending party. Road rage has resulted in violence a few times in recent years. Since moving here I have become very polite driver and make a point of not pissing someone off, considering the fact that in todays world flipping a person off might result in the person being flipped off pulling out a legally permitted hand gun and skillfully blowing that middle finger right off your hand. Not long ago in Johnson City a guy pissed off another driver in some way so that driver followed him over 5 miles to his home and when he exited his car in his driveway, the person following him kicked the crap out of him, putting him in the hospital. The person beaten had committed the unforgiveable offense of making a right hand turn into the path of the guy that beat him, impeding the person's progress and requiring him to slow down. Gang violence happens here also, as do drug related shootings, but far less frequently than in the Utica area.
I guess we need to look into placing steel sheeting in the exterior walls of homes, and putting Lexan windows in the place of glass in order for kids to be able to be safe in their beds.
