It looks as though you guys have been going through a period of instability with on and off rain and cloudy weather. At least it is too warm to snow. Looks like a typical spring with better weather right around the corner. We have been experiencing warm and clear weather for a few days but the rain is coming back with a chance of scattered rain back in the forecast for us also. Rain chances increase daily until Wednesday when the chance of scattered storms becomes a probability for three days before returning to sunshine once again. Spring arrives here in early March.
My mind goes back to Utica and CNY several times a day remembering when I was excited and enthused to see temperatures staying in the 40's and above during the days. 40's dictated switching to a lined flannel shirt from my winter coat. It is funny how our bodies acclimate to temperature. I often waded through snow to fish for trout in April with layers of clothing that allowed for the taking off of layers as the sun came out and the temperature warmed up. April, no matter the weather, was "spring." Even when there was snow in the air in April, we knew that it was not going to stay and that better weather was right around the corner. I do miss NY and the fishing this time of year. When we had the camp in Verona Beach we usually opened the camp around the first week of May. When it is in the 40's here I still wear a winter coat occasionally. When it hits 50 I relinquish the coat for a lighter jacket or a flannel shirt.
I am going to the greenhouse today to purchase our plants for the garden. There is an amazing sale going on. Tomato, pepper, cucumber, and annual flowering plants are all on sale for 22 cents each. I think that is the lowest price I have ever paid for garden plants. We are about a month ahead of NY when it comes to warm spring weather. I will be putting our plants on a table under the carport in case of an unlikely frost for about another week before I transplant them into the garden and containers by the back porch. Some people have already planted their gardens but I am a bit overly cautious. When we first moved here I planted early, lost all the plants to a late frost, and had to replace everything and start over. We will be doing the gardening this next week or so that we would not start until Memorial Day when we lived up North.
Going into the high 70's and low 80's here today, with a chance to see the low 90's tomorrow. I said it before. I am always happy to be here in winter, spring and fall, and certainly don't miss the snow and ice in NY. Come summer I often yearn for the warm days and cool evenings that you see in summer in NY. While we don't see the extreme heat that they experience in Georgia and Florida, it does get uncomfortably hot and sticky here. Late June, July, and August dictate working outside in morning and evening, and occasionally finding yourself hiding from the heat and hot sun in the afternoons. Those are the days when I wish I was in a boat on Oneida or Delta Lake, with a gentle and temperate breeze blowing, while dangling a bait for a nice fat walleye.
Enjoy the spring weather. Whether it arrives in March or May, it is a welcome respite from the dark and cold doldrums of winter.
