UTICA — Enessa Carbone described the 100 block of Genesee Street as once dilapidated and condemned, with the exception of a few longtime businesses.
It was Utica College’s Robert Brvenik Center for Business Education at 181 Genesee St. that brought some glimmers of life to downtown, she said.
But she also asked the question: What impression did the area leave on students?
“We saw this boarded-up building and really thought that if we turned it into something cool, with young people living down here with a market, with a Jimmy John’s, (we could) just, get the energy back and get people walking down here,” Carbone said.
That idea is at the heart of a new grocery store that will open Friday at 167 Genesee St., the site of the former Rite Aid building. Called the Street Corner urban market, the store is a “combination of a convenience store and a supermarket,” Carbone said, with fresh food, regional beers and toiletries.
The store is more than 2,000 square feet. The market will initially support two managerial positions and eight other employees.
General Manager Vincent Donnelly envisions the wide choice to be ideal for a core demographic of consumers who want fresh food.
“More customers today ... are going to Price Chopper or Walmart three or four times a week because you buy what you need that day,” Donnelly said. “I think it’s going to be a lot of fun, and we’re going to have everything you need, and you don’t have to go to Walmart and waste two hours every day.”
The opening is also another sign of greater business development on the 100 block of Genesee Street. On March 1, a new soul food restaurant called Soul One 12 opened inside 171 Genesee St. Before that, Character Coffee opened in that space in December 2017, and Jimmy John’s sandwich shop opened at 167 Genesee St. in September 2018.
What will Street Corner carry?
The Street Corner urban market will carry fresh produce like lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelons and fresh corn. Owner Enessa Carbone said the market also will feature chicken, steak, sushi, deli and soup items, breakfast pizzas, breakfast sandwiches, Boston Salad brand salads, a F’real milkshake machine, regional beer, potted herbs and artisan cheeses, among other items.
“We won’t have tons of volume like Walmart ...,” Carbone said. “We want to have a little bit of everything (that’s) good quality and fresh.”

I think it will be a hip and posh place catering to more well to do I guess. They have to remember they have two large apartment buildings downtown with elderly and disabled people plus three more huge apartment building a few blocks East up Bleecker St also with elderly and disabled.
I like the idea of fresh greens and veggies and I hope the pricing is near Walmart prices. I stopped at Hannaford yesterday and while there remembered I needed lettuce but at $2.49 a head that is over my budget so I had to put it back. As I reminded myself that when I was working I was able to afford that. I'll get my lettuce at Walmart for $1.28 and I have never had a problem with there greens or veggies always fresh and hell ya can always bring them back if something is wrong.
