I was at the VA in Johnson City today and saw several people with their ashes on their forehead. There is not a huge population of Catholics here, but when I went by the Catholic church on my way out of town, there was a lot of activity. Do they hold masses during the lunch hour time slot, or maybe just have a priest there to administer the ashes?

Most of the Churches in Utica of Catholic denomination still use the old fashion approach and hold Mass and also administer ashes after Mass. Many of those parishes add on one or two Masses for that day. St John's has the 12:10PM Mass as always then adds on a 5PM Mass for those getting out of work.
In Syracuse and Rochester Ash Wednesday has its own Penitential Service ( not a Mass ) with the administration of ashes. I noticed more and more parishes are doing this. I like that method and that is how it was done in seminary. What takes place is the usual Mass on that day with administration of ashes then another service with the administration of ashes. Takes a while for Utica to catch up with the rest of the diocese and world I thing. Seriously even the Churches need to be updated to new liturgical norms for arrangement of furniture for a house of worship.
What I like is the availability of ash distribution within Protestant denominations. More and more are seeing the need. Today in New Hartford during the noon hour ashes to go are distributed. You can drive up stick out you head and be remind that repentance is needed in life and that in the end we are ashes and will return to our true home with the Triune God. I wish you a peaceful Lent, Clipper and also to all those on board. Let us use this time to draw a little closer of that which we call God.

I wish you a peaceful lent also PB. Thanks for the information. I know that the guys that worked for me at the base used to go to St John the Baptist on Dominick St in Rome on their lunch hour for their ashes. I never asked if they attended a mass or not.
