wpdh.com/new-yorkers-may-vote-to-split-state-away-from-new-york-city/?trackback=fbshare_mobile&fbclid=IwAR1kfNJ_tFz5MOuGTFO8oFJSdCUiFZBVH7dFjKXVbc_zym5YCox6mX8bBwAEveryone in upstate NY gets upset that such a large portion of the states tax money goes to NYC and downstate counties and from time to time the idea of splitting upstate from NYC comes up. It always ends with someone bringing up the fact that NYC is the "economic engine" that drives the states's economy. Upstate areas would most likely have to raise taxes substantially to afford the costs of independence from downstate. I would guess that with the job situation, and other economic issues, upstate would have a tough time finding the money to properly maintain infrastructure such as the highway system. People are bailing out of NY State already, with high taxation being one of the contributing factors fueling the exodus. The topic comes up fairly frequently, but I would imagine that as has always been the case in the past, it will once again be a non-starter or a losing referendum if actually seriously taken up.
