www.wktv.com/content/news/Officers-seize-3-king-cobras-other-reptiles-from-home-490559311.htmlI can possibly see someone having a boa constrictor or python for a pet, but a king cobra? What demented individual would even think about keeping 3 king cobras in addition to other venomous snakes in their home? We have had weird snake handling churches here in the past and of the ones I have read about in the news, the snake handling preachers that lead those congregations have all managed to be bitten on numerous occasions and a few years ago one of the most well known around SW Virginia finally was bitten by a copper head and died as a result. There are no longer any active groups in this area.

I missed this one. There is some type of Spanish church that opened up next door from the Sabor Latino eatery ( Latin soul food) here on Bleecker St.. Opened same time as the eatery. Weird group. I walked by tonight and they were up to something and one woman had a bathrobe on running around shouting something. I have been wondering where they came from. Only about 6 or 8 people and a couple little kids. I take it is Christian because of a cross on the window that lights up and blinks in green and red and white small bulbs. I do know there is another one up on John Street that uses snakes in their worship activities. I wonder about this one now. All we need.

I just remembered I never told this true story of my adventures with a snake that surprised the dickens out of me. I was in the Monastery in my first year of training( preparation) called Postulancy. Anyway I got off my work rotation and entered our Postulant building up the road from the main Monastery. Went into my cell( Franciscan spirituality terminology for a bedroom) and there it was this huge snake staring at me. Well I have no idea but I jumped up in the air and landed on the rail of the headpost on my bed. Tom my classmate heard me and ran in as I said look a Cobra. He start laughing and grabbed the damn thing saying. Naw it's only a Rat Snake and took it outside to the backyard. My cell was next to the door that opened to the backyard which was not enclosed with many hiding places for snakes because of all the cinder block left there when an addition was added onto the building. I do have to say in my spare time that year I cleared it all away. Tom was a Navy guy from Pennsylvania and was also into nature and had knowledge of a wide variety of birds and yes snakes. I will never forget that encounter. Tom said to me you know Franciscans are supposed to love nature. I said I do but you can keep the snakes. When we went on our weekly hikes in the woods surrounding our Monastic compound ( 1000 acres in the rolling foothills of the Ozark Mountains) he used to point out these different kinds of snakes including those horrible Copperheads. He would pick them up and squeeze the jaw exposing the fangs and milk the damn thing. Tried to get my to hold one once but that was not going to happen. Our Postulant Director Brother Rufino was a retired Air Force officer. Actually 90% of the Brothers were former Military. We even had one Marine Brother Eric. He would train us and new employees for self defence techniques for when we had to work in the Psych floor in the infirmary. Eric went on and obtained his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from St Louis University. He also designed the new addition to the Infirmary that would house the new Physical Therapy/ Occupational Therapy Center for the Rehab work we were expanding into. Also contained the Lab and Xray Center. The Infirmary was about 40 feet longer than St Joseph's Nursing Home in Utica but had 4 floors. Here is a photo,

Here is the original Infirmary and Monastery dating back to 1884. Part of it was still standing in 1966 when I got there. Owned originally by a group of Nuns Sisters of Mercy for many years but they all died of tuberculosis. Brother Bogumil Gowrecki served as the first Superior of the community and took position of the property in 1927. Original group was 4 and expanded to 20 in a few years. Original group was from Poland escaping during WW1.It was Cardinal John Glennon who welcomed the Brothers into the Archdioceses of St Louis and established them as the Franciscan Missionary Brothers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus giving them permission to establish "a house of charity".

I was involved in a conversation about snakes yesterday. I was at a Red Cross blood drive. Another volunteer and I were at the recovery table chatting with a friend who was donating. It was a very slow day and we had nothing else to do.
Somehow we got on the topic of military service and both of them had spent time at desert duty stations. One said that he and a friend captured rattle snakes to sell to a local pet store. The most valuable was a green diamondback. One day his toddler son was riding his trike on the sidewalk in front of the base housing. Phil saw that his son had gotten off the trike was was on the sidewalk looking at something.
He hustled over and saw his son face-to-face with a green diamondback. His neighbor saw what was happening and came with his snake catching rig. Phil kept his son calm while the neighbor scooped and bagged the snake. After a lecture about staying away from snakes, they were off to the pet store to sell the snake for a quick $50.
Some people have strange taste in pets.

someone took a video of a coyote on the Charlotte Pier here in Rochester the other day. Not sure how he found himself there but very unusual.
