Actually listening to a few seconds of the song I wasn't overwhelmed by the song either - But it was a HIT Hey he wrote Candy Girl for the Four Seasons, not a bad accomplishment.

Even though it was a hit not a record I would have bought and listened to back then. Some song writers should stick to just that. I agree with you Dave. Think that song would have sounded way better with Barry White singing it. Definitely more his style.

Yes, it was a hit and I remember it, too. And you're right, when you think of all the people recording and all the songs, to get a hit is no mean accomplishment. Wiki says he wrote songs for several pop groups, but gives no detail. Also says his genre is "blue-eyed soul," which gave me a chuckle. Hadn't heard that term before.

In answer to reply #394 This is Dick Aversa, I'm in the photo (right) and I was the Bass Player. Center back is Johnny Collins form North Utica who played rhythm guitar. I was 14 or 15 in the photo and probably one of the youngest members of the musicians union and playing clubs every weekend while in my early years at UFA. Kit told me about the photo and this site....what a great piece of history! Not sure if I played with Rock very long and remember Eddie Reily from Noyes Street as the drummer with Richie Bowen, Johnny and Myself. We also did a lot of country tunes as Richie played and loved the steel guitar and Danny Alberico was in at times. I also have a photo of Carl and the Dominos that I played with......Carl Milo, Emil Warchol, and Ken Lasher (who replaced Joe Maltese). If I really hunt I may find a photo of Joey and the Drifters which John Collins was also in. With the Dominos I also met and played with Ron Gilman- drums, Joe Fiore - Sax, Pete Berg- guitar, Norm Knapp -guitar, and Wayne Bowling -drums. Also played in the Five Stars which booked locally and had twin sax one being a tall guy named john Weber.
My Brother, Sal is in the photo of Ralph and the Royals on the right hand side of the group shot. Chick Vennaro also played with them for awhile and so did Paul Favat of the valley.
One of the best memories of being in the groups was going to Uncle Henries Pancake house after the clubs, meeting other groups and socializing til the late hours. Sloppy Joes ( Pelitarri Ave) on Saturdays was another meeting place.
It was fun being the young kid and being part of the late night scene.
My first Bass was bought off Tommy Migliacco and it had Arnie Palmer's autograph on the thin side of it lol

Tracman, so you also socialized with Rufie and Henry who seem to never leave the place. ;D Do you remember little short Joanie who waitess for Henry most of his years there? She was a one in a million. I remember one night in the wee hours, she got so mad at Henry who was riding her for talking too long to us, she picked up one of the syrup bottles and threw it at him. That place was a riot.

Glad to see ya join us Dick. I am Dick Naegele from Keyes Rd. I went to school with you at Seymour in the eigth grade. I worked with Dick Bowen at Central Coach Lines and Utica Rome Bus Company in later years.
You will enjoy this forum. This particular thread is great, and brings back memories for all of us, whether we were musicians or not. I never played music, but my Uncle was Jim Gaylord, a drummer that played with Kit and his band among others. He also played music at one time or another with Dale Ryder, sat in for the chessmen a couple of times after their accident, and played with quite a few other bands at different times.
I can't remember which of you is the oldest, you or Sal. Now that I think about it, I think it was Sal that I went to school with, if he is the oldest. Hell, I guess I am getting old and senile, haha.
Anyway, I am glad to have ya join us. Enjoy, and bring us some more of those memories from the 50's and 60's.

In answer to reply #394 This is Dick Aversa Welcome Dick Thanks for filling in the names on Post #394. I modified the post to reflect your information. I knew Johnny Weber back then from UFA. A tall redhead with glasses that played alto sax. He died many years ago. Last I saw him was when he was living on Cottage Place and State Street.

We sure could see the resemblance between you and your brother Sal. I can't tell from the picture if Sal was playing a Goya guitar. I'm pretty sure it was Sal that had a Gold Sparkle Goya the twin to a Red one that I had that were bought at Judson's Music on Columbia Street.

Didn't Nick Capuanna play with the Royals about that time? I think Joe Nuccio might have played with them also. I seem to remember someone playing with the early Royals that lived on Bennet Street that contacted Leukemia. Would you know who that might have been?

Royals Join Disc Parade
Another Utica group has joined the growing list of platter makers.
They are The Royals, a rock 'n' roll quintet whose 45 rpm recording of "Mix Up" and "Shake It" was released two weeks ago by Aegis label of North Utica.
Tom Migliaccio, leader of the group said the record was "doing very well in this area" and had been released nationwide.
With the record have come several plumbs: Two appearances on Channel 9 in Syracuse; an upcoming appearance on WKTV; a will cover Lake George, summer resort tour which Lake Placid, Old Forge and possibly Wildwood, N. J.; another recording date; an increase in area engagements which now average three or four a week.
The Royals started as a family group. Tom, Fran and Ralph, sons of Clare and Anthony Migliaccio, 903 Lamb St, started playing for their own enjoyment around the house. Word of their playing spread. Paul Favat, a tenor saxophonist from Herkimer, and Sal Aversa, guitarist, joined the group.
That was two years ago.
"Since then we've picked up a good following." Tom said. "We've played Syracuse, Rome, Cornell, Colgate and Hamilton College, and play a lot of high school hops."
Tom is the only member who puts in full-time working in and for the group. Fran and Sal are seniors at Utica Free Academy, Ralph attends Utica School of Beauty Culture and Paul is an insurance major at Mohawk Valley Community College.

Hi all! My brother is 2 years older than I am. I remember you Dick N. from Seymour School. The guitarist john collins married a Keyes Road girl.... a little younger than us named Jackie E. I'm sure you know who I mean...Very beautiful lady and had a brother your age Joe.
Both Nick and Jerry did a stint with the Royals...I beleive one before and one after my brother did. I still run into Ralph once in awhile and see Fran every few months somewhere. Went to the Casino last year to hear his group...Fran Cosmo.... great show!!! Really enjoyed it. Do a search on my space and you can find him and his new music!
Yes my brother had and loved the Blue sparkle Goya ( concave fretts! ). Sold it when he got out to Carl Milo and then it was stolen if I remember correctly. I remember the Red one too... saw it on stage but didn't know who owned it at the time. Great guitars.
I also played and worked on occasion with Eddie Arcuri (Grippies), started groups with Dave Tucci, John DePalma, and practiced with Lou Sportello from Frankfort but we (lou) never got it off the ground. Also Ron Colangelo from Rome..... these were all short encounters, but fun memories. John, Dave and I are all car enthusiasts and I see them often.
When I think of the Sixties ...I think of Great Bands, "parking" up on Grace Road, cruisin Genny and King Cole's, a Drag Race at every stop light, Utica Rome and ESTA Dragway, and fair fights with a code of honor among men... not the trash we read about in the papers today.
Hey who will post some photos here for me? Tracman@adelphia.net is my EM

Jon, If I'm remembering correctly Joe Nuccio did play with the Royals for a while. He had the group the Bandella Brothers with Barry and John (can't remember their last names). They played in most of the favorite local spots around here. Joe also ran the old Reggie's Lounge but didn't last there very long. Went to the Turning Stone Casino a few weeks ago and was surprised to see Joe playing in the new lounge there. It was just Joe and a girl. Didn't catch the name he is using now. Have known Joe from our school days and wanted to talk with him that night but he was performing and we had to leave. He was working as a dealer there for quite a while but I guess he went back to performing again. Oh, he was also playing at the Polish Community Center on Columbia St for a while to. Don't think that's going any more.
