Interesting article in Slate about the new Yamaha totally electronic AvantGrand piano. This is NOT Chuck Daniel's Electric Piano! :)

Roll Over, Beethoven
How Yamaha's new electronic piano improves upon a 300-year-old instrument.

Kit, where have you been? Sure I want one, I'm just waiting till I have a spare $20,000. :)
I'm glad to spend less than a 1% of that on old boatanchors and fix 'em up.

Jon is the instrument man ... he should get one. Then we can come visit him and play it!

Dave,

I've been teaching (yes, ballroom dancing... and don't anyone snicker) since June and have
been busy with that and processing music for CDs in the classes. Last class is next Tuesday, then I'm taking a vacation.

Hey, maybe Jon will buy one of them there keyboards and bring it to next year's Summerfest!

Kit, don't tell Mrs. Dave about your ballroom dancing. She'll wish she married you instead.
It is truly a wonder to watch those who do it well, and I assume you do. For myself, I don't feel comfortable gliding across the floor ... no part of me is made for gliding!

When I was in business I was invited to a ballroom dancing clubs dinner dance once. My ex and I enjoyed it very much. The orchestra and the music were excellent, and enjoyable, and if you did not know a lot about dancing, there were lessons available by coming an hour earlier than some. It was a really enjoyable event, and if I had the time, I would have pursued it further. I am a fan of big band music and the old standards anyhow, and there is nothing any more enjoyable that gliding across the floor to a Tommy Dorsey tune being played by a good band.

Dave... I promise not to breathe a word about the dancing to Mrs. Dave. But I have to explain that like the difference between an apple and an orange (both of which are fruit, and tasty) the dancing you see on TV isn't the kind of dancing I do. That's choreographed dance routines worked on for 6-8 hours a day, one-on-one with a professional and then performed. I do 'social, leadable' ballroom dancing. Similar in some ways, but not the same at all.

Clipper... I think you mentioned The 100 Club sometime back. They're still around, as are The Patricians. The club The Debonaires bit the dust and many of the dancers drifted into the other groups. I see many of the same faces at the various dances. And you're right... a nice big band who plays a lot of the old standards is great to listen and dance to. (This makes me reminisce about your uncle Jim and the great times we had playing in the same band years ago)

Yep, the 100 Club.

I may be old and certainly not a music expert, but I really miss music that has a melody, and harmony, and involves more than banging on a guitar and drums, while shouting at the top of one's lungs. Even the old country ballad style has fallen prey to the country rock revolution.

Wish we could go back to the days of Bobby Vinton, Andy Williams, Dean Martin and others. That was "easy listening" and one could turn on the radio and relax.

Today's music would be a little hard to turn down low and drift off to sleep by. I think I would tear the doors off to escape if today's rock became "elevator music" haha. Can't imagine being trapped in a confined space with THAT pounding in my ears! :o :o
